Post ZZR 400 K No Radiator Fan
Hi new to site, I just bought a zzr 400 k 1991, it seems to ride well but it' s a bit tatty so been reading through on all good advice here on how to go about checking, servicing and generally sorting her out.
I came across this problem though : it boiled the coolant when I was parking in my front yard last week as it takes about a 20 point turn to get the bike in.
I investigated to find there's no radiator fan.
Does anyone know if there' s any genuine reason for this or should I just go ahead and get one off ebay and fit it before I ride it again?
Also is there anywhere to get new fan or will the £20 scrap ones on ebay last me ok?
any thoughts much appreciated.

get some decent coolant in there too - don't know if you're in the UK or not, but with our weather recently, the coolant shouldn't really be boiling if the bike's not running for that long.

Decent coolant + working rad fan should sort your bike out :P

Yes I'm in London, got the coolant and deionised water ( i see that's what people here recommend - less corrosion) and the fan should be here before the weekend as well so all good.
I was riding for about 30 mins before it boiled and then I think its only cause I was blipping the revs to get it into my yard, it only just fits.
The coolant that dripped out didn't feel concentrated enough as well so I guess the previous owner had been cutting corners and adding water.
got any tips on something I can flush the cooling system with? since I"m going to have the fairing and radiator off anyway.
Thanks :-)

Fuel Tap Help Please,
So I've got all the bits I need stripped all the fairing off the bike to take the rad off and fit my new (scrap) fan but I've never taken the tank off a bike before. I need to get it off as I can't find the connetor for the fan. I followed the haynes to the letter but I think the fuel tap is faulty as petrol is still coming out.
Am I right in thinking that it should shut off when the engine's off so that I can remove the tank even though there's fuel in it??
I there anyway of sorting it out while it's full? I notice there's a release type button on the side that makes the petrol run out fully but it still won't shut off even if i pull this a bit.
I thought of a workaround by attaching a improvised plug or tube that I can swap on that's taped to the top of the tank but figure this could be a safety issue so any knowledge appreciated.
thanks

Taps gone I'm afraid. In matters of flammable liquids, bite the bullet and don't bodge it. Get a new one from Cradley Kawasaki. You will need to empty the tank to fit it though.

Thanks for quick reply MarkG
Guess I'll be buying a big jerry can then cause i've only done 30 miles since I bought the bike and the tank is full - think that's called sod's law
I just checked that Cradley website and they only list parts for the current models they have older parts if you call up do they?
Is there are repair possible - found this on wemoto
http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/Kawasaki/ZZ ... epair_Kit/

but not haveing taken it apart before I've got no idea if this is useful or not.
thanks again
tom.
edit;;; can't find whole valve and filter part anywhere so going to try this repair kit from wemoto, will post back with results

Well thought I'd leave an update:

Scrap fan off ebay is now fitted and working, or at least I've tested it by shorting the wires on the temp sensor on the radiator and the fan blows well. I've yet to flush and refill the cooling system and check it's coming on on it's own, that will have to wait till next weekend now.

My fuel valve woes are not fixed though, I bought the rebuild kit from wemoto and fitted all the bits the same way as the ones I took out (of which the diaphragms looked a bit shabby but the o-rings looked ok) but now it leaks even more than it did before.
Has any body done this before and got any pointers? there is very little info on this, save for a diagram in the haynes and I can't find a complete valve to buy.
any info much appreciated
tom. :(

Hi
Just thought I'd finish this post off as I've sorted the fan now.
I managed to find a guy online breaking a zzr 600 d:
http://www.zzr600.stevesbikeparts.co.uk/
and got the fuel tap off him, payed paypal and postage was very quick item well packaged etc. so would recommend if you're looking for used bits.
I fitted the wemoto rebuild kit to this new tap which will hopefully give it some life to come and it all worked fine, (reasuring that I wasn't doing anything wrong just the one I had was knackered beyond rebuild).
so now I can take the tank off safely, hooray,
I found the wire which someone had kindly clipped off with cutters so no connector attached. For now I've use a mains style connector block to connect this to the fan wires ( i had to cut this connector off to do it), taped it all up with insulation tape and now have a working fan.
at least it works when I short the switch, I've yet to find out if the switch works as I can't ride it with no brakes - see other post - and in this cold weather I got bored of waiting for it to heat up enough revving the engine standing in my front yard getting funny looks off the neighbours. When I get it back on the road I'll find out for sure i guess.
On the upside I got to flush the cooling system out till it ran clear and fill with the correct concentration of antifreeze so that is one plus so far. 8)
Thanks for the advice on this
tom.
